Capillary Discharge for X-ray Laser Pumping
|
A fast capillary discharge is a promising alternative of table top soft X-ray laser pumping. Our aim is to develop a system with a lasing wavelengths shorter than 20 nm. As a starting point we have studied both theoretically and experimentally the discharge in the evacuated polyacetal capillary which would result in laser action at Balmer alpha transition of hydrogen like carbon ion (18.2 nm). Special ultraviolet and soft x-ray spectral diagnostics is developed to measure time profiles of the plasma temperature and density. Experiment with the capillary filled by the material ablated from the wall is prepared. Role of the pinching and is studied. Atomic processes which would establish the inversion population are analyzed.
Our research in this field has been started in the year 1998. It is based on the long term experience of the participants in the fields of laser plasma modeling, experiments with discharge pumped gas lasers and soft X-ray plasma diagnostics. International collaboration has been started. Common research has been done together with the Austrian and Russian colleagues and collaboration with German and French laboratories is prepared. Part of the work has been done in the frame of CTU research plan Lasers and their Applications.
