In the past five years, the integration of desktop computers, networked learning communities, and the World Wide Web in higher education has initiated many innovations and helped improve the learning process. The goal of the project "Virtual Workshop of Microworld and Megaworld" was to employ this information pedagogy approach at the CTU to teaching modern physics as a base for high technology. The project has been carried out at the Department of Physical Electronics of the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering (FNSPE) in cooperation with the Department of Physics, Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FEE).The main activitites conducted in the framework of the project were :

(1) Verifying the Unix Compaq AlphaServer 4100 5/600 (2 CPU, RAM 1 BG, HDD 27 GB) as the central facility of the Virtual Department of Physical Sciences and Information Pedagogy.- Selection, licencing, implementation, and testing of the integrated education system WebCT, Version 2.0, for courseware distribution, communication, testing etc.

(2) Systematic searching the Web for high-quality net-based educational materials in the area of modern physics and scientific computation, their evaluation and application.- Development and testing of original documents and programs for Web-supported learning and students' research covering selected topics in physics of microworld and megaworld.

(3) Building a new, sophisticated workplace for development of new-generation Web documents and multimedia courseware using the visual workstation SGI 320 (2 CPU, RAM 0.5 GB, HDD 9 GB, FPM 17").- Selection and implementation of an extensive SW set for development of future generation of educational materials based on the coordinated use of programs from Macromedia,Adobe,MathWorks, Wolfram Research,Waterloo Maple etc.

All materials created in the framework of the project will be used in courses delivered at the FNSPE and/or FEE. Selected products of the project will be available generally at the servers Vega (FNSPE) and Aldebaran (FEE).
