The World Wide Web has matured into a powerful tool for scientists, engineers and educators. Today's Web represents a sea change in our professional lives, providing new ways to communicate ideas and transfer knowledge. Its use in higher education, including distance and life-long learning, has become a hot topic in the past few years.

The project "Educational Materials for the Virtual Department of Physical Sciences" had to be a concrete and specific contribution in this area at the Czech Technical University. The project has been conducted as a cooperative activity of three subjects: Department of Physical Electronics of the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering (FNSPE,coordinating site), Department of Physics of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FEE), Institute of Physics of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FME). The program of the project has included three partial tasks :

(1) Contemporary Physics for Experts of the Future : Innovation of the extensive WWW document "Physics on the WWW for Prospective Students of the CTU". These Web pages consist of a series of presentations of modern branches of physics, loadable education programs, and carefully selected list of commented references and to introductory physics.

(2) Examples and Exercises for Physics: Development of an essentially improved Web-based collection of examples in selected branches of introductory physics -oscillations, wave phenomena, geometrical optics, physical optics, and quantum physics. All examples include detailed solutions with many illustrations, also several Java applets are presented.

(3) Virtual Workshop of the Microworld and Megaworld : A supplement to the concurrent project supported by the Development Foundation of Czech Universities (795/99). In the framework of the IGA grant application of the methodology of a virtual workshop and JiTT (Just in Time Teaching) has been stressed, including the use of this approaches in some courses taught at the FNSPE.

Almost all products developped in the framework of the project "Educational Materials for the Virtual Department of Physical Sciences" will be available on the servers Vega (FNSPE) and Aldebaran (FEE).
